A final review of sentences for your superhero project:

This is a Complex Sentence.  It is made up of a dependent clause (which needs more information) and an independent clause.  An independent clause is a complete thought and a simple sentence.

This is a compound sentence.  Each of the independent clauses is a simple sentence.
I will review and publish information from your Library blogs and post any new images of heroes on the Room 52 blog.

Now, for the next and last portion of this project.

Your superhero is allowed to have 2 extra special powers (flying, running fast, moving at superhuman speed) in addition to the regular Strengths you have as learners.

You will now move on to the writing portion of this project that involves you using different lengths of sentences.  In the sentences you will explore and explain the Strengths and Struggles you have as learners.  You only have 5 sentences to do this.  I do not want you to go over the limit, but I want you to do the best job with completing your sentences correctly.

My superhero's name is Mind.  Mind has the ability to fly and he also has superhuman strength.  He has spent many years of his life reading and studying because he loves to develop his mind.  He is very smart, but he is also forgetful and can be easily distracted.  Mind is the hero for the world needs.

Only a few of you are following directions.  Here are the assignment requirements:

a) Completion of rough ideas about your Strengths and Struggles.  What you are good at and have difficulties with.

b) Your Superhero image must be completed.  The code should be copied into your blog or saved on a Microsoft Word file and handed in to me on a USB key.  I would prefer it pasted into the blog.

c) Part a) of this assignment should be completed before you can do this one.  This is the writing portion of the assignment and you will be responsible for the following:

1.  Using a simple sentence to introduce the name of your hero.
2.  Use 2 compound and 1 complex sentence to discuss what your hero's Strengths and Struggles are.
3.  Use a simple sentence to make a final statement about your hero. 

The assignment will be marked out of 25:

5 marks for the completion of your rough ideas
10 marks for the creation of your hero
10 marks for the writing portion of the assignment

Before you continue with this project, you need to do the following:

1.  Complete a blog entry or journal entry (in your Literacy folder or Journal) about your "Strengths and Struggles."
Thanks to Kenny, Ewan, and John for adding some details to the "Strengths and Struggles" for completing this.

To illustrate what to do, I am going to list my Strengths and Struggles as I begin to think about planning for the creation of my hero.

Strengths:
- ability to run at super speeds
- ability to gather people together for a common cause and purpose to work together
- fix and work with electricity 

Struggles:

- being overwhelmed by too much information
- leaving things to the last minute
- trying to do too much

2.  Once this is done --and it needs to be before school ends on Friday-- you may begin to develop your hero or continue to work on what you started from last week.  I suggest you use Google Chrome to access the link.  Here it is:

3.  a) Once you play around and begin to develop your hero, you will need to save it.  When you click save, it will give you a long code and should look something like what you will see in this screenshot I took:


You will need to copy this code and save it to a Microsoft Word file and save it on your home drive.  Without saving this code, you will lose all of the work you do.

** Do not add any information to the sheet you paste the code on, but you may save the file name as something you will be familiar with:  Bishophero.doc

b) When you return to the project and want to load your file, you will have to open up the Word file, copy the code and paste it into the box on the screen and then press okay.  If you want to work on this at home, you will have to find a way to save the code on a USB key or email it to yourself.

Take your time with this project.  It is not meant to be rushed.  I will be back on Friday for you to ask me any more questions on the project.

I spoke about a Superhero project we would be doing towards the end of the year.  It involves both some Writing and aspects of Art. 

You will have to think a little about the Strengths and Struggles you have in school.  All of use have strengths that allow us to be good at certain things and feel a sense of success.  At the same time, we have things we struggle with which are difficult for us to do and sometimes frustrate us.

Your powers will be based on your strengths.
Your weaknesses, or what your enemy can do to make your life difficult, is based on the things you struggle with.

The writing portion has to do with you creating a series of sentences for your Strengths and Struggles.

HOWEVER, I WANT YOU TO THINK OF HOW YOU CAN POSSIBLY FACE YOUR ENEMY!!
So, you will also be creating a section on how to confront your Struggles, aka, your enemy.

This project is to be based on real issues that you face.  Only the body and image of your hero will be manufactured using the Hero Maker program.

Today, in Library, you will need to think a little about your Strengths and Struggles and the image you may want to use.  I want you to share your thoughts on your blog page.  I will be checking this and giving you some feedback.

Reading Response for Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Please consider looking at this Reading Response post by Zhao Lun from 2 weeks ago.  It is an excellent example of how a Reading Response should look and sound like:

24 newspaper Response: Date: May 2nd, 2013  He has put the date.  Please also include the title of the article you read.

Retell:  Explains or summarizes what the article is about.

3 men were charged of interfering in the Boston bombing, they stated they had hid fireworks in a suspect's backpack during the bombing. People say the "trio" swiftly covered for his friend from the FBI, they leaked some pictures of the suspects.

Relate:  Zhao Lun makes a connection with the article and offers some insightful ideas and connections to things he has read or heard about before.

It makes me feel sick to know United States makes war and not truce, If united States had stood down and signed a peace treaty, they might of saved themselves some time to fix the poverty, homeless, and to fix up the places that has been broken down, but instead of aiding their homes, their just making it even worse.

Reflect:  This section reads very similar to the one he wrote before and allows him some more time to make connections.

I have nothing to reflect on this, but to say that there are other bombings that were even more devastating like the Afghan Wedding Party bombing, 30 people were killed in the bombing, and it wasn't even given attention like the Boston bombing, I'm not saying that the Boston Bombing wasn't big, but I think they should give more attention to other bombings too.
